TL;DR
- VWO works on Shopify, but there is no VWO app in the Shopify App Store — you install it by pasting the SmartCode snippet into
theme.liquid. - After install, VWO gives you a visual editor and a stats engine. It does not pick tests, write variants, or read results for you. Someone on your side still does all three.
- The free Starter plan covers 50,000 monthly tracked users with basic A/B tests. Paid plans start at roughly $314 a month on annual billing and climb past $1,800 for Enterprise.
- On non-Plus stores, checkout pages are off-limits, theme updates wipe the snippet, and Online Store 2.0 section IDs break visual-editor selectors.
- VWO wins when you have a CRO team that wants full control, multi-page funnel tests, or server-side experiments. Below that, a $99 a month autonomous tool usually returns more lift per hour spent.
Does VWO work on Shopify?
Yes, VWO works on Shopify — but not the way most merchants expect when they search for a VWO Shopify app. There is no app. VWO is a general-purpose experimentation platform, and it treats Shopify like any other website: you copy a JavaScript snippet called SmartCode and paste it into the <head> of your theme. Once the snippet loads, VWO can read the page, inject variant changes, split traffic, and count conversions.
What VWO does not do is run the program. It is a classical A/B testing tool in the sense we describe in our category definition: the human picks what to test, writes the hypothesis, builds the variant in the editor, sets the goal, waits for significance, and decides whether to ship. VWO gives you a reliable place to do that work. It does not do the work.
So the straight answer to "vwo for shopify" is: it runs fine on Dawn, Sense, Symmetry, Brooklyn, or Debut, it costs between $0 and a few thousand a month depending on traffic, and it only pays off if you already have someone who will design and read experiments every week. If you don't, the snippet sits in your theme doing nothing — we have seen that outcome more than once.
How to install VWO on a Shopify store
The install takes about five minutes if you are comfortable in the theme code editor. VWO's own docs describe the same steps.
- In VWO, open Settings → Account → SmartCode and copy the asynchronous snippet. It starts with
window._vwo_codeand referencesdev.visualwebsiteoptimizer.com. - In Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes → ⋯ → Edit code, open
layout/theme.liquid. - Paste the snippet as high as possible inside
<head>— above your stylesheet links, so VWO can apply changes before the page paints and you avoid a flash of original content. - Save, then load your storefront with
?_vwo_debug=1or use the VWO Chrome extension to confirm the code is firing.
The result looks like this in theme.liquid:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html class="no-js" lang="{{ request.locale.iso_code }}">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<!-- Start VWO Async SmartCode -->
<script type='text/javascript' id='vwoCode'>
window._vwo_code || (function() {
var account_id = 123456,
version = 2.1,
settings_tolerance = 2000,
hide_element = 'body',
/* ... VWO-generated code continues ... */
})();
</script>
<!-- End VWO Async SmartCode -->
{{ content_for_header }}
{{ 'base.css' | asset_url | stylesheet_tag }}
That is the entire "VWO Shopify integration". There is no OAuth connection, no app embed block in the theme customiser, and no access to Shopify order data unless you wire it yourself.
Revenue tracking is the part that trips people up. VWO counts a conversion when its goal fires. For a Shopify order, the clean way is a custom pixel under Settings → Customer events that listens to checkout_completed and pushes the order value to VWO. The old method — pasting code into Additional scripts on the order status page — stopped working for non-Plus stores in 2025, so any tutorial that still recommends it is out of date.
VWO plans and what each includes for a Shopify store (October 2026)
VWO sells several products — Testing, Insights, Personalize, Feature Management. A Shopify merchant almost always wants VWO Testing (Web). Prices below are VWO's listed annual-billing rates for the lowest traffic tier; monthly billing runs about 20% higher and every tier scales with monthly tracked users.
| Plan | List price | Traffic included | What a Shopify store actually gets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | Free | 50,000 MTU | A/B tests via visual editor, limited goals, VWO branding on reports, no multivariate or split URL tests |
| Growth | from ~$314/mo | 10,000 MTU, scales up | Unlimited A/B tests, split URL tests, basic segmentation, revenue goals, email support |
| Pro | from ~$873/mo | 10,000 MTU, scales up | Everything in Growth plus multivariate tests, multi-page (funnel) tests, advanced targeting, custom JS/CSS per variant, priority support |
| Enterprise | from ~$1,849/mo | Custom | Everything in Pro plus server-side testing, SSO, dedicated CSM, uptime SLA, mutually exclusive experiments |
Two honest notes on that table. First, "monthly tracked users" counts unique visitors who load SmartCode, not visitors in a test — on a store doing 80,000 sessions a month you will be above the free tier immediately. Second, the Pro and Enterprise features that matter most on Shopify (funnel tests across product → cart → checkout, server-side tests) sit behind the two most expensive tiers, which is why most Shopify merchants on VWO are either on the free plan doing simple tests or paying $10,000+ a year.
The real cost is not the licence. A VWO account with nobody running it is a line item with zero return. Budget for the person: a freelance CRO specialist in 2026 runs $75 to $150 an hour, and a well-designed test takes 4 to 8 hours to brief, build, QA on mobile, and read. That is $400 to $1,200 per experiment on top of the plan.
What breaks when you run VWO on Shopify
VWO was built for general websites. Shopify has rules that general websites don't, and the snippet-only integration means VWO hits all of them.
Checkout is off-limits unless you are on Shopify Plus. The information, shipping, and payment pages run on Shopify's own domain and do not load your theme's theme.liquid, so SmartCode never fires there. Plus merchants can add scripts through checkout extensibility, with restrictions. Everyone else can test up to the cart and then watch the biggest drop-off in the funnel untouched.
Theme updates wipe the snippet. When you update Dawn from 13.0 to 15.x, or switch from Debut to Sense, Shopify installs a fresh copy of the theme. Your hand-pasted SmartCode is not in it. Because VWO has no app embed, there is nothing to re-enable with a toggle — you re-paste by hand, and tests run on an empty control until you notice. We have seen stores run three weeks of "experiments" with VWO silently absent after a theme update.
Online Store 2.0 section IDs break selectors. The visual editor records a CSS selector for every change. On OS 2.0 themes, that selector often includes an ID like #shopify-section-template--18462011392215__main. The number changes when you duplicate a theme, publish a new one, or sometimes when you edit the template in the customiser. The variant then applies to nothing, and VWO's report shows a tidy 0% lift.
Cart drawers and dynamic sections load after SmartCode. Dawn's cart drawer, predictive search, and quick-add modals render on interaction. VWO's editor can target them, but changes need its "apply on DOM change" setting or custom JS, and each one is another thing to QA.
Flicker. SmartCode hides body for up to the settings_tolerance window (2,000 ms by default) while it fetches test settings. On a store that already scores 55 on mobile Lighthouse, that delay is visible and it costs conversions in the control as well as the variant.
Price and discount tests need something else. VWO can change the number shown on a product page. It cannot change what Shopify charges at checkout. If you want to test $49 against $54, Intelligems is the tool — it owns that surface and VWO does not.
None of these are bugs. They are what happens when a platform-agnostic tool meets a platform with strong opinions.
Where VWO genuinely wins
We would be lying if we said a Shopify store never needs VWO. Three situations where it is the right choice:
You have a CRO team that wants full control. If a growth lead and a designer are already producing a hypothesis backlog, VWO's editor, segmentation, and reporting are mature and predictable. A team that knows what an MDE is will get more out of VWO than out of a tool that hides the knobs. Convert and Optimizely compete here; Shopify Rollouts does for theme-level tests on Plus.
You need multi-page funnel tests. VWO Pro lets you change the product page, the cart, and (on Plus) the checkout in one experiment and read the combined effect. Single-page tools — including every autonomous tool we know of — treat each page independently. If your hypothesis is "a consistent free-shipping message across three steps lifts checkout completion", VWO is the honest way to test it.
You want server-side tests. Enterprise VWO runs experiments in your backend via its SDKs — useful for Plus merchants with a headless Hydrogen storefront, or for testing logic that never touches the DOM, like search ranking or recommendation order. Snippet-based tools, ours included, cannot do this.
If you are in one of those three groups, stop reading and go set up VWO. The rest of this post is for the other 90% of merchants who typed "vwo for shopify" into Google.
When a $99 a month autonomous tool is the better fit
Most Shopify stores that look at VWO are between $300k and $3M a year in revenue, with one to five people, and nobody whose job is experiments. For that store, the question is not "which A/B testing tool" but "who is going to run the tests". VWO's answer is: you are. An autonomous conversion optimization tool's answer is: the AI is.
| VWO on Shopify | ShopShift (autonomous) | |
|---|---|---|
| Install | Paste SmartCode into theme.liquid; re-paste after theme updates |
Paste one script tag; survives theme updates because it reads the rendered DOM, not selectors you recorded |
| Who picks the test | Your CRO person | The AI, from funnel drop-off and page traffic |
| Who writes the variant | Your copywriter or designer in the visual editor | The AI, after reading your brand, copy, and screenshots |
| Who reads results | Your CRO person, watching for significance | Bayesian winner check runs nightly; winners ship or roll back automatically |
| Checkout on non-Plus | Not possible | Not possible — same Shopify rule |
| Pricing tests | Not possible | Not possible — use Intelligems |
| Funnel + server-side tests | Yes on Pro / Enterprise | No |
| Monthly cost | $0 to $1,849+ licence, plus $400–$1,200 per test in labour | $99 flat, 30-day free trial, no labour |
| Time to first live test | Days to weeks | Minutes |
The honest trade: VWO gives you control and charges you in hours. ShopShift takes the control away and charges you $99. On a store with no CRO staff, the second deal wins on arithmetic. Our data across stores with 10,000 to 150,000 monthly visitors shows a first declared winner inside 7 to 30 days and a first-winner lift between 1 and 4 percentage points on conversion rate — results that a VWO account nobody has time to run will never produce.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a VWO Shopify app?
No. As of October 2026 there is no VWO listing in the Shopify App Store and no app embed block you can toggle in the theme customiser. VWO's "Shopify integration" is a documentation page that tells you to paste the SmartCode snippet into theme.liquid. If you find an app named VWO in the store, check the developer name — it is not VWO's parent company, Wingify. The lack of an app is also why VWO does not survive theme updates on its own and why order tracking needs a custom pixel.
Does VWO's free plan work on Shopify?
Yes, with the same install. The Starter plan covers 50,000 monthly tracked users, which fits most stores under about 60,000 sessions a month. You get A/B tests through the visual editor and basic goals. You do not get split URL tests, multivariate tests, revenue goals without extra work, or an unbranded report. For a merchant who just wants to test a headline on Dawn's hero section and has the time to read the result, the free plan is a reasonable way to start.
Can VWO test the Shopify checkout?
Only on Shopify Plus, and only within what checkout extensibility allows. On standard Shopify plans the checkout runs on Shopify's domain without your theme code, so SmartCode never loads and VWO cannot see or change anything there. This is a Shopify restriction, not a VWO one — every snippet-based tool, including ours, has the same limit. Test up to the cart, and treat checkout changes as a Shopify settings question rather than an experiment.
Will VWO slow my Shopify store?
Some. The asynchronous SmartCode is about 60 KB and hides the page for up to 2,000 ms while it fetches settings. On a fast store with a well-cached CDN response the hide window closes in 200 to 400 ms. On a store already carrying six marketing scripts, the delay is visible on 4G. Lower settings_tolerance to 500 ms if you are willing to accept occasional flicker instead, and keep the snippet above your stylesheet links.
Does VWO break when I update my theme?
It stops running. A theme update or a new published theme installs a fresh theme.liquid that does not contain your pasted snippet, so VWO sees zero traffic until you re-paste it. Variants built on OS 2.0 section IDs can also stop matching after a duplicate or republish. Add a step to your theme-update checklist: re-add SmartCode, then open each running test in the editor and confirm the change still applies.
How does VWO compare to Intelligems for Shopify?
They solve different problems. Intelligems is a Shopify-native app built for price, discount, shipping-threshold, and bundle tests — it changes what the customer is charged, which VWO cannot do. VWO is a general on-page experimentation platform with a stronger editor, segmentation, and multi-page tests. Many stores run both: Intelligems for offers, VWO for layout and copy. An autonomous tool like ShopShift overlaps with the VWO half, not the Intelligems half.
Can I run VWO and ShopShift together?
Technically yes — both are head snippets and neither blocks the other. Practically we advise against it. Two tools changing the same page produce overlapping experiments, and neither stats engine knows about the other's variant, so both will misattribute lift. If you want VWO for a specific funnel test, pause ShopShift on those paths using protected URL rules, run the VWO test, then unpause. Keep one tool as the owner of each page.
